In 2010 he became an Assistant Professor and in 2012 he obtained a permanent position as Associate Professor at the Electrical, Electronic, and Communications Engineering Department at UPNA where he holds the position of Head of Department since November 2021.

He has been a visiting scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Boston, MA, USA) in 2008, Siemens AG (Munich, Germany) in 2011, and Universidade Technologica do Parana (Parana, Brazil) in 2013 and 2016.

In 2013 he received the IEEE GOLD Award for his contributions to the development of novel optical sensing waveguides based on micro and nano-structured films. He is the author of more than 200 scientific journal and conference publications and five book chapters most of them related to optical sensors based on nanostructured coatings and was part of the team that studied the distinct nature of Lossy Mode Resonances (LMRs), which has been claimed by two different patents. He has participated in more than 20 different research projects with public and private entities, 10 of them as principal investigator, and conducted 4 Ph.D. theses. He is also an active reviewer of many scientific journals, Associate Editor of MDPI Sensors, Hindawi Journal of Sensors and Micro&Nano Letters, and Topical Editor in Optical Fiber of IEEE Sensors Journal (Best Topical Editor 2019).
