Sustainability and Resilient Systems Education Subcommittee

Sustainability and Resilient Systems Education Subcommittee Menu

Scope

Background

Many of today’s pressing engineering challenges, including energy, water, food, transportation, infrastructure, and smart cities, share a fundamental trait: they are large, interconnected systems. Students see the relevance of these topics to their lives and careers, yet traditional coursework often lacks a practical, integrative systems perspective. The Systems Council is uniquely positioned to bridge that gap by framing sustainability and resilience as system-level problems rather than domain-specific ones.

This subcommittee is not a new technical group. It is an educational home where students and early-career researchers learn to apply systems engineering to sustainability and resilience challenges, complementing existing IEEE education efforts.

Objectives

  1. Introduce students to sustainability and resilience through a systems engineering lens.
  2. Foster interdisciplinary collaboration by bringing together different engineering communities around shared challenges.
  3. Emphasize learning by doing through practical problem-solving, design activities, competitions, and hackathons.
  4. Create a recognizable year-round theme for educational events that connects academic knowledge to real-world systems.
