In a world rapidly moving toward intelligent automation, the Young Professionals Committee of IEEE Systems Council together with IEEE Young Professionals Sri Lanka, IEEE Central Illinois Section YP Affinity Group took a bold step to bridge the gap between emerging technologies and young professionals by organizing an enlightening and technically rich workshop series titled “Robotics in Industry 4.0: Automation and Smart Manufacturing.” Spanning over 10 sessions — including 8 webinars and a hands-on physical workshop — the event ran throughout April to June 2025, bringing together top academic minds and industry experts to explore the frontiers of robotics, AI, machine learning, and smart manufacturing systems.

This initiative was aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of how robotics and AI are revolutionizing the manufacturing industry. Designed for fresh graduates, engineers, managers, and undergraduates in robotics and automation, the program welcomed over 100 participants and was delivered through a blended format combining theoretical learning and practical application. The effort was led by the Young to Niche Professionals (Y2N Pro) team of IEEE Young Professionals Sri Lanka.

The series kicked off on April 26th with Prof. Ruwan Gopura (University of Moratuwa) laying the foundation in Introduction to Robotics & Industry 4.0. This was followed by a captivating session on AI and Machine Learning in Industrial Robotics by Dr. Nushara Wedasingha, where he discussed how intelligent systems are shaping the evolution of autonomous machines.Sessions covered diverse and advanced topics such as robot kinematics, collaborative robotics, simulation platforms, RPA in manufacturing, and human-robot interaction. A notable highlight was the physical workshop on May 18th, featuring real-world case studies and applications of smart systems in Sri Lanka’s local industries. Hands-on exposure to industrial robotic platforms, RPA tools, and simulation software gave participants practical insights that complemented their theoretical knowledge. Esteemed speakers included experts such as Prof. Amila ThibbotuwawaProf. Buddhika JayasekaraDr. Anuradha Ranasinghe, and Dr. Chapa Sirithunga (University of Cambridge), among others. Each brought unique perspectives, from safety standards and ethics in robotics to cutting-edge applications of blockchain and digital twins in Industry 4.0.

What set this workshop series apart was not just the quality of content but the active engagement of participants through Q&A sessions, discussions, and real-time problem-solving. The format encouraged critical thinking, collaboration, and the development of future-ready skills. In alignment with IEEE’s vision of advancing technology for humanity, this workshop series significantly contributed to preparing the next generation of engineers and professionals to lead the way in smart manufacturing and intelligent automation. It empowered participants to not only understand the current industrial revolution but to actively shape it.
