2022 WISE Webinars

Women in Systems Engineering (WISE) 2023 Webinar Series

Welcome to the IEEE Systems Council Women in Systems Engineering (WiSE) 2023 webinar series. One of our goals for 2023 was to create educational and networking opportunities for the Systems Council's participants and the systems engineering communities.

We are excited to announce the following talks featuring experts from our community. Please check this site for the most up-to-date information as we will be adding more information regularly.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to the WiSE Committee Chair, Holly Handley. If you would like to learn more about the WiSE community, please visit our page

We look forward to seeing you all soon at our upcoming events!

From Black Holes to Cable-stayed Bridges

22 MARCH 2023 at 11:00 AM ET

Seemingly disparate topics are often connected in surprising and important ways.  In this talk, I will explore some of these connections, with examples from my current work at the National Science Foundation in the Division of Astronomical Sciences.  One of the key scientific goals identified for the upcoming decade as described in The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine 2020 Decadal Survey in Astronomy and Astrophysics includes the search for habitable exoplanets, which connects to the broader existential question, “Are we alone in the Universe?”  It was this type of big question combined with the beauty of the cosmos and a technical, scientific approach to gathering data that drew me to study astrophysics.  Continuing to expand the limits of our knowledge of the Universe and our place in it now requires larger, more complicated telescopes and more innovative ways to “see through the noise”, especially as light pollution and radio noise are increasing.

Leadership in the Engineering and Construction Industry

3 MAY 2023 at 11:00 AM ET

Rear Admiral Aguayo has over thirty years of experience leading engineering and construction organizations as an officer in the United States Navy Civil Engineer Corps. This talk will draw from her experience and lessons learned and focus on how to lead boldly, build learning organizations, and cultivate a culture of excellence. The discussion will use examples from throughout her career to highlight the skills needed to lead organizations of all sizes. It will also highlight major on-going infrastructure projects currently underway in support of the Navy including the multi-billion dollar modernization of the four public shipyards.

Impact of Generative AI in Systems Engineering

14 JUNE 2023 at 11:00 AM ET

The release of Chat-GPT3 in November of 2022 marked the beginning of a new age of systems engineering. Chat-GPT is based on generative AI, a technology that creates knowledge artifacts not simply aided knowledge recovery or decision support. While the technology is in it’s infancy, there is already work that explores using it for requirements engineering and design. This talk will give an overview of the Generative AI, discuss how it is already changing systems engineering, look at possible futures, and issue a few cautionary notes about premature wholesale adoption.
