Call for Nominations - IEEE Systems Council James O. Gray Scholarship

Description:  Named in memory of James O. Gray, the scholarship recognizes students pursuing studies in process control systems engineering, plant automation or instrumentation & measurement.

Administration:  The IEEE Systems Council

Eligibility:  IEEE student members studying process control systems engineering, plant automation or instrumentation & measurement at the graduate and/or first professional degree from an accredited university, with no other scholarships and a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.8 or above

No relatives of current members of the IEEE Board of Directors, the Systems Council Governing Board, the James O. Gray Scholarship Committee, or IEEE staff may be candidates, may nominate or endorse candidates for this Scholarship.

Eligibility and Selection process shall comply with procedures and regulation established in IEEE and Society governing documents, particularly with IEEE Policy 4.4 on Awards Limitations".

Selection/Basis for Judging:  Evaluations will be based on the application and stated financial need.  The application shall include an essay on why these fields of study are important and how the applicant could have impact in these fields. At least 3 letters of recommendation shall be provided, two of which shall be from current or former university professors who taught the applicant or know him or her personally.

Prize Items:  $5,000 and a certificate for Graduate student; $2,000 and a certificate for Undergraduate student. Funds will be paid to the school on behalf of the student.

Frequency:  Annually

Funds:  The Graduate level scholarship is funded by a donation from the James O. Gray Fieldbus Foundation Scholarship Fund to establish the James O. Gray Scholarship Fund of the IEEE Foundation; the first professional degree scholarship is funded by the IEEE Systems Council

Nominee Solicitation:  Call for Nominations will be circulated via the Council website, the Council Newsletter, and social media.

Scholarship Committee: The Scholarship Committee consists of a Chair and two additional Council officers or Society representatives, appointed by the President

Schedule:  For the first year, the Call for Nominations will open on January 1, close on March 1, and will be awarded at the IEEE International Systems Conference in April 2017 in Montreal, Canada..  For subsequent years, nominations open on September 1 of previous year, close on March 1 of award year, and will be awarded at the IEEE International Systems Conference in April.

Presentation:  The award will be presented at the IEEE International Systems Conference held each spring in North America.

Publicity: The Council will develop an Award brochure advertising the award.  This will be circulated at Council Conferences, IEEE Student Branches, IEEE Societies and Councils, University engineering department heads, University financial aid offices, posted on the Council website, posted in the Council Newsletter, distributed via a targeted email to the Systems Council participants group, and distributed via social media.
